Ewiva network continues to grow: 97 new ultrafast charging points activated in the first quarter of 2025

The expansion of Ewiva’s ultra-fast charging network continues unabated. In the first quarter of 2025, the joint venture of Enel X and Volkswagen Group, which was established to accelerate the development of electric mobility in Italy, activated 97 new charging points (PoCs) at 23 new stations, further strengthening the capillarity of its infrastructure throughout the country.

The extension of Ewiva’s network in the first quarter of 2025 covered many Italian regions, with new activations in both metropolitan areas and small towns, demonstrating its commitment to making electric mobility accessible everywhere.

New ultra-fast charging stations activated across the country, starting in northern Italy: six in Emilia-Romagna, in the municipalities of Castel Maggiore (BO), Rimini, Sassuolo and Castelfranco Emilia, both in the province of Modena, Russi (RA) and Montecchio Nell’Emilia (RE); two in Piedmont, in Turin and Isola d’Asti (AT); one in Lombardy, in Varese; five in Veneto, in San Stino di Livenza (VE), Motta di Livenza (TR), Colceresa Nord and Colceresa Sud, both in the province of Vicenza, and Verona; and finally one in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, in Martignacco (UD) . These are joined by a new charging station in Liguria, in Ceriale (SV).

In Central Italy, Ewiva also strengthened its network with four new charging sites: two in Lazio, in Rome and Montalto di Castro (VT), and two in Tuscany, in Pontassieve and Bagno a Ripoli, both in the province of Florence.

Finally, among the South and Islands, new activations included Basilicata, with a site in Potenza, and Sardinia, with two new sites in the municipalities of Loceri and Tortolì, both in the province of Nuoro.

To ensure a simple, quick and convenient charging experience, all the new stations are strategically placed near urban areas, points of interest or traffic junctions to allow all e-drivers to make the most of their charging time, indulging in a break and taking advantage of the many services in the surrounding area, such as bars, restaurants, supermarkets, stores and other businesses.

At many of the new stations it is possible to pay directly at the Ewiva charging station in contactless mode with debit, credit or prepaid cards from the Mastercard, Visa, Vpay and Maestro circuits, or via Apple Pay and Google Pay. This payment method is in addition to those already available throughout the rest of the Ewiva network, where it is in fact possible to recharge through cards or apps from about 100 different charging service providers (MSPs), or-if one’s vehicle is enabled-through the Plug&Charge feature, which allows one to start charging simply by connecting the vehicle to the column.

Overall, to date Ewiva has built 400 charging stations and more than 1,400 ultra-fast charging points throughout the country.

Charging experience at the e-driver’s fingertips: with Ewiva, even more advanced customer service thanks to artificial intelligence

Freeing up the desire to travel electrically, ensuring a quick and easy charging experience. It is to achieve this goal that Ewiva, the joint venture of Enel X and Volkswagen Group, created to accelerate the development of electric mobility in Italy, has enhanced its customer service through a strategic partnership with TP Italia, a global leader in Digital Business Services Management.

In this way, Ewiva aims to guarantee an intuitive, accessible and reliable charging service, putting the needs of e-drivers at the center. KEY2025: the results of the National Sustainable Mobility Race

For the first time with the support of Ewiva and as part of Key – The Energy Transition Expo in Rimini, the Sustainable Electric Cars Race for Students (SEL3C4RS), the National Sustainable Mobility Race that involved more than 100 students and teachers from all over Italy, concluded last March 7.

A total of 17 student teams, from secondary schools and ITS in Valle d’Aosta, Piedmont, Liguria, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Umbria and Puglia, joined the initiative: numbers almost doubled compared to last year’s participation, confirming the growing interest in a competition that is much more than just a race, but a real laboratory for training, research and development of the skills of the future.

A unique competition, organized by the Network of Schools for Sustainable Mobility, in which young talents competed in the design and development of innovative solutions for electric mobility, combining technique, innovation and sustainability.

Ewiva, a joint venture of Enel X and the Volkswagen Group created to accelerate the spread of electric mobility in Italy, was the main sponsor of the event, supporting the initiative to bring new generations closer to the culture of sustainability and electric mobility, enabling them to develop the technical and transversal skills that are essential for tackling their studies and preparing them for the world of work.

A PODIUM OF TECHNOLOGY, INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY

After three days of free races, warm-ups, speed and endurance tests, it was the team from the Istituto di Istruzione Superiore Vallauri di Fossano (CN) that triumphed, taking the top step of the podium with a total of 910 points. IIS Vallauri’s project, Freccia F25, is distinguished by careful assembly design on SolidWorks, combined with advanced technologies such as 3D printing for the battery support and water jet cutting for the axle and wheel arms. Construction also required manual work, such as plate cutting, while the sustainable core of the project was ensured by the recovery and recycling of materials used for the various components. Static tests, 3-D simulations and track tests finally allowed for optimization of the race performance. The vehicle was built from scratch, with a design developed in collaboration with the Centro Europeo di Modellismo Industriale, the training center founded in the 1980s by Giorgetto Giugiaro.

In second place, with 740 points, was the team composed of ITS Sustainable Mobility and ITS Greentech/Energia Piemonte, which focused on optimizing and reusing an existing vehicle, reducing waste and costs. This team’s prototype was distinguished by improvements to the chassis, transmission and electric motor, as well as the creation of 3D-printed mounts that enabled optimal integration of the vehicle’s propulsion and control systems, providing a more efficient and compact layout. An additional innovative element was the integrated telemetry system, which enabled real-time monitoring of temperature, engine rpm and performance.

Third place, with 710 points, was the team from the Allievi Sangallo Technical Technological Institute of Terni (TR), already the winner of last year’s edition, and which for the 2025 entry focused on a highly engineered approach with the creation of a carbon fiber body. ITT Allievi Sangallo’s goal was to achieve a lightweight yet strong structure, improving the vehicle’s aerodynamic performance and safety. The body was made using advanced techniques, including application of resins and structural materials, with meticulous finishing to ensure an aerodynamic and eye-catching design inspired by hypercars. The project was also made under the banner of recycling, reusing and adapting working chassis, front and rear components from a previously made vehicle.

EWIVA FOR THE NEW GENERATION: TRAINING, SKILLS AND CULTURE OF SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY

The second edition of the Ewiva-branded National Sustainable Mobility Competition demonstrated that the ability to innovate sustainably stems from the passion and creativity of young talents, combined with solid skills and specializations, which represent an asset for the future of industry in our country. Ewiva firmly believes in the importance of initiatives like SEL3C4RS, which offer students the opportunity to acquire concrete technical and soft skills, allowing them to directly confront the mobility challenges of the future.

The 2025 edition of the competition has obtained the patronage of the European Commission, the Italian Union of Chambers of Commerce (Unioncamere), the Unione Industriali di Torino (Education Area), the Unione Industriali di Cuneo and SIMTUR, testifying to the educational value and strategic importance of the competition in promoting sustainable mobility.

Ewiva brings electric mobility to high schools with “E-mobility@School” educational project

Bringing new generations closer to and enthusiastic about the world of electric mobility: it is with this goal that Ewiva, the joint venture of Enel X and Volkswagen Group, launches the educational project “E-MOBILITY@SCHOOL – the electrifying journey begins today,” which for the 2024-2025 school year involves more than 500 classes and about 12,500 students from secondary schools throughout Italy.

Sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security and in line with the goals of the UN 2030 Agenda, the educational initiative is free for schools and is aimed at raising awareness among the youngest students on extremely topical issues such as sustainability, climate change, emissions reduction and the future of mobility. The project, in fact, provides a curriculum that can bring teachers and children closer to the world of e-mobility, learn about its benefits, discover the technologies that make this type of mobility increasingly easy, as well as its impact in environmental terms, while promoting the spread of knowledge about the energy transition.

Not only that: by dialoguing with the new generations through schools, the project aims to break down existing barriers and clarify widespread doubts about one of the most current and recurring topics in the economic and information scenario.

Implemented in collaboration with Neways, a communications company specializing in educational projects, the E-MOBILITY@SCHOOL project involves sending to all participating classes a digital teaching kit to support teachers and students that deals with the most current topics of Environmental Education in line with the mandatory cross-curricular teaching of Civic Education (Law 92/2019) and the Sustainable Development Goals of Agenda 2030, specifically Goals 7 “clean and affordable energy,” 9 “business, innovation and infrastructure,” 11 “sustainable cities and communities,” and 13 “combating climate change.” Inside the kit there is also a final questionnaire that gives access to a certificate of participation useful to receive training credits, in agreement with the school.

Schools may choose to continue the journey by also hosting educational meetings with experts in the field who will engage students and allow them to get to the heart of the issues of electric mobility and energy transition.

Finally, schools may also choose to participate in the creative contest provided by the E-MOBILITY@SCHOOL project to further engage classes on the issues addressed. Students will have to create an artistic essay on the theme “Your idea of energy and sustainable mobility”; the 3 most interesting projects, selected by a jury, will become mural artworks created by professional street artists who will use them as inspiration to decorate Ewiva charging stations in different locations in Italy. In addition, the 3 winning classes will receive a cash voucher as a prize for the purchase of technology or educational products to be used in school activities.

“Ewiva is a joint venture created to accelerate the diffusion of electric mobility in Italy,” says Daniela Biscarini, CEO of Ewiva, ”and so it is natural to turn to the new generations, because they will be the ones to lead the way toward a zero-emission future. Young people must be protagonists of this change, as conscious and decisive actors in the green transition. Our task is to stimulate them and give them all the tools so that they can develop a full awareness with respect to their daily choices, including mobility, and a sense of responsibility toward environmental sustainability.”

Ewiva builds 115 HPC PoCs between January and September 2024

Ewiva, the joint venture of Enel X and Volkswagen Group, has installed another 115 ultra-fast charging points (PoCs) for electric vehicles at 30 new stations from January through September 2024, further strengthening its network in Italy.

With the expansion of its HPC charging sites in all Italian regions, Ewiva once again confirms itself as a key player in enabling electric mobility from North to South, offering an increasingly extensive, widespread and high-performing network.

In Northern Italy, in fact, Ewiva has installed 21 new charging stations, which translates into 74 PoCs, distributed in different regions: in Lombardy (7), Emilia-Romagna (4), Piedmont (5), Liguria (3), Trentino-Alto Adige and Veneto (1).

New activations also in Central-Southern Italy: there are 9 new charging stations built, for a total of 41 PoCs: in Abruzzo (1), Lazio (3), Marche (1), Tuscany (1), Puglia (1) and finally Sicily and Sardinia (1 per region).

As usual, Ewiva’s new charging stations are all strategically located near businesses, services or points of interest, further confirming the company’s commitment to ensuring an increasingly simple and comfortable charging experience for e-drivers. With the same goal in mind, at the new stations it is possible to pay directly at the Ewiva charging station in contactless mode through debit, credit or prepaid cards from the Mastercard, Visa, Vpay and Maestro circuits, or through Apple Pay and Google Pay.

E-drivers appreciate ewiva’s high power charging network

Widely present throughout Italy, the “High Power Charging” (HPC) electric vehicle charging sites installed by the joint venture of Enel X and Volkswagen Group have been praised by 94 percent of electric vehicle drivers.

When it comes to the quality of a service, the judgment that matters most is that of those who use it every day. This is the case for Ewiva’s high-power public charging service, which received a score of 4.77 out of 5 from end customers: this is what emerges from data collected one year after the company began its collaboration with &Charge, the platform that allows users to leave their feedback on the charging experience, with the aim of constantly improving the service.

Over the past year (July 2023-August 2024), the high-power sites of the Charging Point Operator (CPO) – born from the collaboration between Enel X and Volkswagen Group to promote the transition to electric mobility in our country – have been appreciated by 94 percent of e-drivers, who also judged the charging speed of Ewiva’s columns to be in line with expectations. In addition, 97 percent of users said they found Ewiva charging stations in perfect condition and preferred those located near businesses or shopping centers, bars and fast food restaurants.

Added to the data collected by the &Charge platform are those from the internal analyses that Ewiva conducts in real time on the entire network, with the aim of ensuring the best possible service in terms of efficiency, ease of use and speed. These show that the state of network availability, that is, the time during which, net of external causes, the infrastructure is uninterruptedly turned on and properly functioning, has stood at 99 percent over the past year. Also according to the information collected by Ewiva, up to August 2024, more than 800,000 recharges of an average duration of about 30 minutes have been carried out, during which thanks to high-power charging, depending on the various models of electric cars, it is possible to bring the battery to at least about 20 percent to 80 percent and be immediately ready to go again.

Also positive is the data regarding the waiting time at the charging station. In fact, it turns out that queues almost never occur at Ewiva sites: only in about 2 percent of cases charging takes place within two minutes of the previous one, demonstrating how Ewiva, by continuing to extend its ultra-fast charging network through a dynamic and flexible growth plan, acts to anticipate and thus enable the growing adoption of electric vehicles in Italy.

Luigi Antonio Poggi, Head of Marketing & Sales, Strategy, Communications at Ewiva commented: “The appreciation of the e-drivers who stop and recharge at our stations every day stimulates us to continue on our path toward more sustainable and affordable mobility. We are constantly striving to improve the recharging experience, and after the recent extension of the contactless e-payment service, which is now available at many sites throughout Italy, we will develop further innovations that will make the service increasingly accessible and easy to use. We are focusing on columns equipped with a storage system, or capable of delivering energy at higher powers, but also on expanding the number of charging service providers (MSPs) enabled on the Ewiva network, which today already number about 80. Every choice we make is made to make motorists increasingly satisfied that they have chosen electric.”

Ewiva: 292 charging points built thanks to the EU project Miliar-E

72 High Power Charging sites, for a total of 292 high-power charging points: these are the numbers of the European Commission-funded project that the charging network operator has won and brought to completion.

Thanks to the European project Miliar-E (Italian Capillary Ultrafast Charging Network for Electric Vehicles), Ewiva hits another important milestone for electric mobility in Italy and Europe. In fact, the joint venture of Enel X and Volkswagen Group has installed and activated the project’s 150 Charging Infrastructures, with a power output of 300kW each, for a total of 292 high-power charging points (PoCs) distributed over 72 High Power Charging sites along Ten-T, the trans-European transport network.

Miliar-E is the first European project that Ewiva has been awarded under the Connecting Europe Facility – Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (CEF – AFIF) program and involves, at the overall level, an investment of more than 20 million euros jointly funded by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) and private resources. As part of the project, Ewiva was awarded more than €7 million in funding.

Also as part of the CEF – AFIF program, Ewiva was also awarded grants for the implementation of new high-power charging points in Italy through the Next Wav-E projects, which involves upgrading the ultra-fast charging network for light electric vehicles, and Heavy Wav-E, which aims to integrate the charging network for light vehicles with charging infrastructure for heavy electric vehicles.

“We strongly believe in a future under the banner of a new mobility, in Italy and the rest of Europe, that is accessible and able to liberate the desire to move by electric. – commented Ewiva – The funding obtained from the European Commission testifies to the quality of our work and the effectiveness of this joint venture that, although young, has already achieved such important results. Thanks to the commitment of the entire supply chain, which is almost entirely Italian and with which we collaborate synergistically, we can in fact announce that we have closed the Miliar-E project: we are now ready to face the next challenges to achieve the electrification of mobility in our country.”

Ewiva thus confirms its commitment to the electric transition in Italy and reaffirms, once again, its ambitious goal: to connect, bring closer and accelerate a more sustainable future, making the choice of electric mobility increasingly simple and affordable for everyone, in a capillary way, throughout the country. As of June 2024, the joint venture that brings together the investments of the two Groups has realized over 360 charging stations with more than 1,200 charging points located throughout Italy, from North to South.

In addition, Ewiva has launched multiple important projects, such as the introduction on all its charging stations of Plug&Charge, the feature that allows the charging station to communicate directly with the car and immediately start charging, the partnership with &Charge, a platform that collects e-drivers’ reviews on the charging experience, to improve the quality of the service.

Ewiva extends payment with card to more than 100 charging sites in Italy

Milan, April 15, 2024Ewiva, the joint venture of Enel X and Volkswagen Group, announces a new step toward an increasingly widespread and easy-to-use high-power network: the feature that allows people to pay to recharge their electric vehicle with a credit or debit card is now available at 113 Ewiva sites-more than 400 charging points (PoCs) -across the country. In fact, in the first few months of the year there were 43 sites where the service was extended (for a total of 96 PoCs), adding to the more than 70 where it was already available.

In more than 60 provinces throughout Italy – from North to South, including the islands – it is now possible to pay directly at the Ewiva site with debit, credit or prepaid cards of the Mastercard, Visa, Vpay and Maestro circuits, or through Apple Pay and Google Pay, for an even easier recharging experience.

In fact, the service meets not only the needs of occasional customers, such as tourists and all those who have activated a short-term rental of an electric vehicle, but also of regular e-drivers who, in case of an emergency, may need different payment methods to recharge.

Not only that: it is also an ideal solution for those who have decided to opt for a pay-as-you-go top-up, without, therefore, subscribing with a mobility service provider (MSP).

“Making the recharging service more and more accessible: this is our primary goal, and we are very happy to be able to announce a further expansion of the service that allows you to pay with your card, active to date on more than 100 sites throughout Italy,” said Federico Caleno, CEO of Ewiva. “An increasing number of e-drivers will now be able to recharge their vehicles even more easily and quickly. From occasional users to those who decide to opt for a pay-as-you-go service, the project meets every recharging need, freeing the desire for an electric mobility.”

The 43 charging stations where this functionality has been expanded, in line with the European Commission’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), are part of the European CEUC project.
