Earth Day 2025: how electric cars may change the future of energy

Today marks Earth Day, World Earth Day. A time to reflect on our impact on the planet, but also to look optimistically at innovations that can help make it more livable and sustainable.

Electric mobility is already a concrete response to the need to reduce polluting emissions; although it is maturing very rapidly, its potential is yet to be realized. In the future, electric vehicles will increasingly become an active part of the energy transition, thanks to new technologies and an increasingly advanced charging infrastructure.

Ewiva in Italy is already doing its part, installing in all Italian regions, from north to south, an ultra-fast, technologically advanced, reliable, accessible charging network with smart features and payment methods.

Earth Day 2025: the potential of electric cars

Electric vehicles represent the cutting edge of the automotive industry in terms of driving, reliability and safety, yet they still have further potential to contribute even more significantly to ‘environmental impact in the future by increasing the energy efficiency of cars and the grid. Electric cars, in fact, can turn into real energy accumulators and dispensers, basically functioning in the same way as a large-scale powerbank. Let’s see how:

Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G)
This is the most advanced frontier of vehicle-to-grid interconnection, i.e., the mode through which the vehicle dialogues directly with the grid. When the car is parked and connected to the grid, it can return energy at times of peak demand, becoming a true distributed storage unit serving the national power system and contributing to the stability and efficiency of the entire energy system.

Vehicle-to-Home (V2H)
The electric vehicle becomes a home battery. Connected to the home system, it can provide power at times of highest demand or during power outages, contributing to the energy efficiency of the home and reducing the burden on the grid.

Vehicle-to-Load (V2L)
With V2L technology, an electric car can power external devices: computers, work tools, appliances, camping equipment. Battery power becomes available beyond the moment of driving, opening up new and smart uses for the vehicle.

An increasingly smart ecosystem

All these technologies have one basic premise: to make the charging network increasingly smart, integrated, and widespread. Therefore, we continue to invest every day in infrastructure that not only simplifies charging, but will also be ready to support these new energy scenarios.

According to International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates, there will be more than 240 million electric vehicles on the road globally by 2030. This means there will be increasing opportunities to manage and balance energy supply and demand efficiently, especially through renewable energy sources.

To reap the benefits of electric mobility, it is essential to accelerate the production and use of energy from renewable sources. Only then will it be possible to concretely reduce emissions from the transportation sector and make electric mobility an effective lever of the energy transition.

In parallel, it is essential to promote more sustainable lifestyles and mobility that focus on environmental awareness, sharing and choosing low-impact solutions. Technological advances alone are not enough: responsible daily choices are also needed from everyone.

Ewiva’s commitment

On Earth Day, Ewiva renews its commitment: not only facilitate charging, but actively contribute to the transition to cleaner, shared and smarter energy.

Because the future of mobility is not just electric. It is also connected, sustainable, and increasingly serving people and the environment.

Over 200 million zero-emission kilometers thanks to Ewiva’s charging network

More infrastructure, more interoperability, and new initiatives to make public charging increasingly accessible, thanks also to dedicated promotions and a shared commitment with the industry.

On the occasion of Earth Day, Ewiva – the joint venture between Enel X and the Volkswagen Group created to accelerate electric mobility in Italy – presents the environmental results achieved by its ultra-fast charging network, powered 100% by renewable energy.

Since its launch, Ewiva has recorded over 1 million charging sessions, enabling e-drivers to travel more than 200 million zero-emission kilometers – equivalent to over 5,000 times the Earth’s circumference. This has avoided the emission of over 25,000 tons of CO₂ into the atmosphere, a reduction equivalent to planting more than 1 million trees.

The positive impact extends to air quality, thanks to the prevention of more than 1.5 tons of atmospheric particulate matter and over 60 tons of nitrogen oxides. It also brings benefits in terms of noise pollution: an amount of noise equivalent to that produced by more than 40,000 internal combustion vehicles has been avoided. These figures tell the story of a real transformation: Ewiva’s network is not just a charging infrastructure, but a catalyst for change that helps make cities cleaner, quieter, and more welcoming for the mobility of the future.

An ultra-fast, widespread, and reliable network

In the first quarter of 2025, Ewiva further expanded its presence, reaching 400 completed stations and over 1,400 HPC charging points distributed throughout Italy. The network now covers around 90% of Italian provinces and is interoperable with around 100 Italian and international mobility service providers (MSPs).

More than 80% of Ewiva charging stations are equipped with integrated POS systems, allowing direct payment at the station via card or smartphone, without subscriptions or registration, making them accessible even to occasional users.

Sustainability not only environmental, but also economic for users

Ewiva’s commitment to developing electric mobility is reflected not only in its infrastructure expansion and service quality but also in its strategy to make charging increasingly accessible and economically sustainable. Among the upcoming initiatives, the company has planned a promotion starting from May 1st, dedicated to users who charge via contactless using Mastercard, Visa, VPay, and Maestro debit, credit, or prepaid cards, or via Apple Pay and Google Pay.

This approach fits into a broader vision, where the joint effort of the entire supply chain – from CPOs to MSPs – is essential to building simpler, more transparent, and beneficial solutions and offers for users, making a tangible contribution to the spread of electric mobility in Italy.

Contributing to the energy transition of our country also involves daily choices, like choosing to drive electric. Our goal is to make this choice easier, more accessible, and more convenient,” said Daniela Biscarini, CEO of Ewiva. This is why – as a CPO – we are investing both in expanding the charging network and in launching promotional initiatives that directly benefit users – such as the upcoming promotion for contactless card charging – and the MSPs with whom we are interoperable.

Our initiatives toward MSPs are designed to promote a dynamic and effective transfer of benefits to end users. Our efforts will be even more effective in developing the market if MSPs work synergistically to make charging affordable and accessible. Only through active collaboration among all players in the industry can we strengthen trust in public infrastructure and jointly accelerate the sustainable growth of the entire ecosystem.”

Ewiva network continues to grow: 97 new ultrafast charging points activated in the first quarter of 2025

The expansion of Ewiva’s ultra-fast charging network continues unabated. In the first quarter of 2025, the joint venture of Enel X and Volkswagen Group, which was established to accelerate the development of electric mobility in Italy, activated 97 new charging points (PoCs) at 23 new stations, further strengthening the capillarity of its infrastructure throughout the country.

The extension of Ewiva’s network in the first quarter of 2025 covered many Italian regions, with new activations in both metropolitan areas and small towns, demonstrating its commitment to making electric mobility accessible everywhere.

New ultra-fast charging stations activated across the country, starting in northern Italy: six in Emilia-Romagna, in the municipalities of Castel Maggiore (BO), Rimini, Sassuolo and Castelfranco Emilia, both in the province of Modena, Russi (RA) and Montecchio Nell’Emilia (RE); two in Piedmont, in Turin and Isola d’Asti (AT); one in Lombardy, in Varese; five in Veneto, in San Stino di Livenza (VE), Motta di Livenza (TR), Colceresa Nord and Colceresa Sud, both in the province of Vicenza, and Verona; and finally one in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, in Martignacco (UD) . These are joined by a new charging station in Liguria, in Ceriale (SV).

In Central Italy, Ewiva also strengthened its network with four new charging sites: two in Lazio, in Rome and Montalto di Castro (VT), and two in Tuscany, in Pontassieve and Bagno a Ripoli, both in the province of Florence.

Finally, among the South and Islands, new activations included Basilicata, with a site in Potenza, and Sardinia, with two new sites in the municipalities of Loceri and Tortolì, both in the province of Nuoro.

To ensure a simple, quick and convenient charging experience, all the new stations are strategically placed near urban areas, points of interest or traffic junctions to allow all e-drivers to make the most of their charging time, indulging in a break and taking advantage of the many services in the surrounding area, such as bars, restaurants, supermarkets, stores and other businesses.

At many of the new stations it is possible to pay directly at the Ewiva charging station in contactless mode with debit, credit or prepaid cards from the Mastercard, Visa, Vpay and Maestro circuits, or via Apple Pay and Google Pay. This payment method is in addition to those already available throughout the rest of the Ewiva network, where it is in fact possible to recharge through cards or apps from about 100 different charging service providers (MSPs), or-if one’s vehicle is enabled-through the Plug&Charge feature, which allows one to start charging simply by connecting the vehicle to the column.

Overall, to date Ewiva has built 400 charging stations and more than 1,400 ultra-fast charging points throughout the country.

Ewiva expands its network in Tuscany: inaugurated a new ultrafast charging station in Pontassieve (FI)

Ewiva, the joint venture of Enel X and Volkswagen Group created to accelerate the development of electric mobility in Italy, has inaugurated a new ultra-fast charging station in Pontassieve, in Piazza Aldo Moro. This new site, realized through synergistic collaboration with the municipal administration, contributes to making electric mobility more accessible for residents and travelers.

The new station is equipped with 2 charging infrastructures, also known as 150 kW “columns,” for a total of 4 charging points (PoCs), offering an ultra-fast and reliable charging experience to all e-drivers in the area. The strategic location of the site, located in a commercial area along the SS67 Tosco Romagnola, one of the main arteries connecting Florence with central Italy, allows users to take advantage of the charging time to take advantage of nearby stores, bars and restaurants, as well as supermarket and post office.

With this new activation, Ewiva further strengthens its network in Tuscany, which now has 18 ultrafast charging stations, for a total of 60 active high-power charging points in the region.

“We are proud to inaugurate this new station in Pontassieve, a further step in our mission to create a widespread and accessible charging network throughout Italy,” said Daniela Biscarini, CEO of Ewiva. “Tuscany is a key region for sustainable mobility, and this new infrastructure is an important contribution to foster the electric transition in the territory. Thanks to the collaboration with the Municipality of Pontassieve, we continue to develop innovative and strategic charging solutions, ensuring e-drivers a convenient and worry-free travel experience.”

“Our territory takes an important step toward environmental sustainability with two ultra-fast charging infrastructures for electric vehicles. An ‘important innovation made possible by the collaboration between several partners, added Carlo Boni – Mayor of Pontassieve. This intervention is fundamental to the policies in favor of reducing emissions and promoting sustainable mobility that our municipality carries out at the local level. The new station is, moreover, located in a central location of Sieci, in a nerve center of our territory and in a strategic square that also hosts rest stop and restaurant activities.”
