Ewiva wins three lots of the tender for the construction of 18 new ultra-fast charging stations on Italian motorways

Ewiva, the Enel Group’s ultra-fast charging station operator, announces the award of three lots of the tender promoted by Autostrade per l’Italia (ASPI) for the construction and management of 18 high-power charging sites at motorway service areas, which will house two to four 300kW charging stations, for a total of 98 charging points (PoCs).

According to the tender notice, the new sites—the complete list is available at the bottom of this press release—will be distributed across Northern, Central, and Southern Italy, along the country’s main thoroughfares, to support tourist flows and daily travel. Also in line with the tender notice requirements, the stations will be built by 2027.

For the first time on the Ewiva network: energy storage systems

Designed with particular attention to the motorway context, the new sites will combine quality design and advanced technological solutions. The stations will be equipped with photovoltaic shelters with high-efficiency panels and, for the first time on the Ewiva network, will be integrated with energy storage systems for intelligent energy management. The storage solution that will be implemented will not only reduce overloads on the electricity grid, storing energy during periods of low load or increased solar generation and releasing it during peak demand, but will also ensure the operational continuity of essential services under any grid operating conditions.

Furthermore, the shelters will feature another important innovation: for the first time on the Ewiva network, LED indicators will be introduced to immediately indicate the occupancy status of charging stations. Thanks to a traffic light system, e-drivers will be able to immediately identify whether a charging station is free, occupied, or out of service, facilitating access to charging and reducing waiting times.

Security and video surveillance: high standards at all times

The new stations will be equipped with continuous video surveillance systems, integrated into the shelters, designed to ensure maximum user safety during the charging experience. Furthermore, the intelligent lighting system, capable of automatically adapting to environmental conditions, will ensure high visibility even at night, helping to make the charging area a safe, welcoming, and easily usable place at any time of day.

Customer experience: simplicity, accessibility, and ongoing support

The experience offered will follow the quality standards already established on the Ewiva network, with the aim of ensuring reliability, accessibility, and ongoing support for e-drivers, even on motorways. The charging service will be supported by a 24/7 assistance system to provide timely support at every stage of the charging experience.

In line with the design approach already adopted by Ewiva, the new stations will be built to ensure accessibility and ease of use even for people with reduced mobility. The layout of the stalls, maneuvering spaces, and pedestrian walkways are designed to allow simple and safe access to the charging stations, while high-visibility signage facilitates orientation and use of the spaces, in compliance with the Highway Code and ANGLAT standards for inclusive design.

This is complemented by simple and flexible charging options, already available across the entire Ewiva network: you can start your session directly at the charging station via contactless payment using credit, debit, or prepaid cards from Mastercard, Visa, VPay, and Maestro, as well as Apple Pay and Google Pay, or through the apps of over 100 charging service providers that are interoperable with Ewiva. The Plug&Charge feature is also available, allowing you to start charging automatically simply by connecting your vehicle to the charging station.
